Air Source Heat Pumps
Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps are equipment capable of generating heating and hot water just like a gas or oil boiler. It is situated outside the property and typically connects directly to your heating and hot water system?
How do air source heat pumps work?
Air source heat pumps work by taking the low grade heat energy in the air outside. They do this with the use of a fan and use this air to raise the temperature of a refrigerant. This refrigerant is contained within the air source heat pump. This refrigerant has a boiling point (i.e the point it turns from a liquid to a gas) anywhere as low as -40c. Even when it is extremely cold outside the properties of the refrigerant can be affected. Once the refrigerant is in a gaseous state the compressor in the heat pump increases the gas pressure and raises its temperature. Think of how a pressure cooker works or even a simple bicycle pump, why does the needle feel warm? Because you have increased the pressure of the gas.
In a heat pump the compressor will raise the temperature of the refrigerant gas to in excess of 80c. Then it can be used to heat the heating and hot water system within your property.
Are air source heat pumps efficient?
For every unit of electricity an air source heat pump uses it should deliver between 3 or 4 units of thermal energy. As a percentage this would make air source heat pumps between 300% – 400% efficient. So the answer is yes they are extremely efficient compared to the best gas boilers available which have efficiencies of around 90%.
How much do air source heat pumps cost to run?
They are 3 to 4 times more efficient than a gas boiler provided they are installed correctly. However it is worth noting that air source heat pumps operate by using electricity which costs anywhere between 3 to 4 times the cost of natural gas.
Air source heat pumps provide significant running cost savings for properties heated by oil and LPG boilers. They will also provide huge savings against direct electric heating. Properties with solar PV panels will likely benefit from an air source heat pump.
